Half Dome Reflection

A single frame from the California Wilderness Collection.

A snow dusted morning
Half Dome reflected in the Merced River from Sentinel Bridge, Yosemite Valley, with fresh snow on the trees

Half Dome rises above the Merced River, its granite face caught in full sun while the valley floor still holds a fresh dusting of snow.

I shot this from Sentinel Bridge in November of 2020, on the first trip I'd been able to take since the pandemic started. We arrived to a Yosemite Valley dusted in fresh snow, but the sun stayed out all day, and with the park nearly empty, it felt like the whole valley belonged to us. It was a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

The Merced River was calm enough that morning to hold Half Dome's reflection almost perfectly, snow-dusted pines and all, one of those rare moments where the valley doubles itself in the water.
